Sharing CFP Using Comics to Build Community: Approaches to Teaching Comics (Roundtable) (Virtual) (9/30/2026; NeMLA 3/6-9/2027)

Sharing our sponsored call for papers on the ninetieth anniversary of Prince Valiant.

The Lives and Legacies of Medieval Comics: A Commemoration of Ninety Years of Hal Foster's Prince Valiant (Hybrid)

62nd International Congress on Medieval Studies, Western Michigan University (Kalamazoo, MI), Thursday, 13 May, through Saturday, 15 May, 2026

Co-sponsored by Medieval Comics Project, Association for the Advancement of Scholarship and Teaching of the Medieval in Popular Culture

Co-organized by Michael A. Torregrossa, Bristol Community College, and Carl B Sell, University of Pittsburgh

Rationale

The comics have a long history of adapting aspects of the Middle Ages, and, while many series and characters have disappeared over time, Hal Foster’s comic strip Prince Valiant has persevered, continuing under a series of writers and artists over nine decades.

In commemoration of the ninetieth anniversary of Foster’s comic in 2027, we’d like to assess the ways that comics (and their adaptations across media) have contributed to the public’s understanding of the medieval past and to illuminate strategies for expanding knowledge of and interest in this corpus as creators, researchers, and teachers.

Submissions that look directly at Prince Valiant (or any of its adaptations) are especially encouraged; however, we will also consider proposals devoted to other characters, creators, and/or series that make use of medieval themes.

Do check out our expanding resource, the Medieval Comics Project Bibliographies, at https://tinyurl.com/MedievalComicsProjectBiblios, for information on prior studies of medievalist comics.

BD & graphic novels: Medium, Message, and the Politics of the Visual (Panel)

Cris(tina) Robu (Davidson College)

Abstract

This board-sponsored session invites papers that explore Francophone bandes dessinées and graphic novels as rich, multi-layered sites of cultural regeneration, resistance, and reimagination. Drawing on Marshall McLuhan’s assertion that “the medium is the message,” we ask: how does the graphic form itself participate in the regeneration of narrative, identity, and memory? How do BD artists across the Francophone world reshape histories and futures by harnessing the dynamic interplay of text and image?

We encourage critical work that considers how BD and graphic novels not only reflect but renew modes of storytelling, community engagement, and political critique. Whether through formal experimentation, autobiographical intervention, or genre-blending hybridity, these visual narratives offer fertile ground for analyzing shifting cultural landscapes.

Guiding questions may include (but are not limited to):

- How do bandes dessinées contribute to the regeneration of collective memory, especially in the aftermath of trauma, colonialism, or displacement?

- In what ways do visual narratives reimagine identity, gender, and queerness as fluid, embodied, and regenerative experiences?

- How does the medium foster cultural and linguistic regeneration in minoritized or diasporic communities?

- What aesthetic strategies are used to reclaim erased histories or challenge hegemonic narratives through graphic storytelling?

- How do BD works engage with questions of migration, race, class, and social inequity, and what role does the visual medium play in renewing these conversations?

- In what ways does the BD form evolve—through digital media, formal innovation, or collaborative practices—to regenerate its own narrative and political potential?

- How do graphic novels function as tools for intergenerational dialogue, offering continuity and transformation across time and space?

- What is the role of humor, fantasy, or speculative fiction in envisioning regenerative futures within Francophone comics?

- How do lesser-known or marginalized creators revitalize the BD tradition, offering new stories, forms, and readerships?

We welcome papers from a wide range of interdisciplinary and theoretical frameworks, including visual culture, media studies, queer theory, postcolonial studies, trauma studies, feminist theory, and transnational approaches. Papers may focus on individual works, thematic clusters, or broader movements, with an emphasis on underrepresented creators and communities.

Please submit abstracts of 200–250 words in French or English.

Description

This session invites papers exploring bandes dessinées and graphic novels as dynamic sites of regeneration and resistance in the Francophone world. We welcome analyses of how BD artists address colonial legacies, queer and feminist politics, migration, race, class, and intergenerational memory.

Comics and Film: An Uncanny Relationship
FAMU, Prague, Czech Republic, August 23, 2024; hybrid
Deadline for proposals: May 15, 2024
Petra Dominkova

The conference "Comics and Film: An Uncanny Relationship" explores the intersection between the 7th and 9th arts – Cinema and Comics – from various perspectives. We welcome case studies of adaptations between these two media, with particular emphasis on submissions focusing on the adaptation of films into comics (rare, therefore much less discussed; e.g. Alien, 1979, or Outland, 1981-2). Additionally, we encourage proposals examining how comics studies reference film studies. Comics studies often utilizes the vocabulary of film studies and we aim to organize a panel focused on analyzing these texts and discussion about how the vocabulary (and overall the references to film) are being used, and perhaps why – how do they enrich the comics studies?

Studies comparing specific formal aspects used in film versus comics are also welcome. These may include the use of close-ups, off-screen sound, work with space (including off-screen space); framing; sound-effects or ambient sound; use of flashbacks or flashforwards, and more.

Therefore, submissions for the conference "Comics and Film: An Uncanny Relationship" should offer new perspectives on the relationship between film and comics, whether discussing particular adaptations or focusing on visual storytelling in general, emphasizing both similarities and differences between the two media.

We welcome abstracts in English (max. 400 words) along with a short biography (max. 150 words) until May 15, 2024, at the email address petra.dominkova@famu.cz. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.

The conference will be held at the Film and TV Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, Czech Republic on Friday, 23rd of August, 2024. As the conference is the result of institution-supported research, there is no conference fee. The conference will last one day, with five panels, one of which will be online to accommodate participants who cannot be physically present in Prague for any reason.
